France Légaré has co-authored an article published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling entitled: "Assessing Shared Decision‐Making Clinical Behaviors Among Genetic Counsellors". The authors measured SDM in genetic counselling appointments with pregnant women who were at increased risk of having a baby with a genetic abnormality. Genetic counsellors exhibited some SDM behaviours more than others, for example they were better at listing all the options with their pros and cons, but were less likely to ask patients about their desired degree of involvement in decision-making. Formal training of genetic counsellors in SDM may enhance the use of this approach in their professional practice.
