France Légaré contributes to a commentary in The Patient on tools to support preference-sensitive decisions

The Support Tools for Preference-Sensitive Decisions in Healthcare: Where Are We? Where Do We Go? How Do We Get There? reports on a symposium held at the meeting of the International Academy of Health Preference Research at their 2018 meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on 14 October 2018. Authors including France Légaré discussed the state of the art of shared decision making tools in light of Harvey Picker's legendary statement: “Understanding and respecting patients’ values, preferences and expressed needs are the foundation of patient-centered care.” Faced with vast array of potential alternatives for many chronic and acute conditions, clinicians are overwhelmed without guidelines and patients are overwhelmed without SDM.  Health preference research could provide the critical tools required for advancing SDM.
