France Légaré Contributes to an Article Directed by Martin Gariepy on the Overuse of Head CT in Children

The objective of this study was to estimate the potential overuse of CT scans of the head in two Canadian emergency departments. The authors conducted a retrospective chart review of children seen in a pediatric Level I (site 1) and a general Level II (site 2) trauma centre during 2016. Both emergency departments demonstrated overuse rates below 10% although overuse rates were higher for older pediatric patients at site 2. Such low rates of overuse can potentially be explained by the university affiliation of both hospitals and by two Canadian organizations working to raise awareness among physicians about the overuse of diagnostic tools and dangers inherent to radiation.
